The Angelus prayer commemorates the Annunciation of the Archangel Gabriel to the Blessed Virgin Mary (Luke 1:26-38).
THE ANGELUS
The faithful who at dawn, at noon and at eventide [evening], or as soon thereafter as may be, devoutly recite the Angelus, or at Eastertide the Regina Cæli, with the appropriate versicles and prayers, or who merely say the Hail Mary five times, may gain:
An Indulgence of 10 years each time.
A Plenary Indulgence on the usual conditions if they persevere in this devout practice for a month.
The Angelus is prayed kneeling (except in case of impediment). From Vespers on Saturday (6:00 pm) till Sunday evening, it is said standing. When prayed standing, it is common practice to genuflect at the words “And the Word was made flesh; And dwelt among us.” This draws our attention to the moment of the Incarnation of Christ into human flesh. It is replaced by the Regina Cæli prayer during Eastertide, and is not used on Good Friday or Holy Saturday.
English
The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary.
And she conceived of the Holy Ghost.
Hail Mary…
Behold the handmaid of the Lord.
Be it done unto me according to thy word.
Hail Mary…
And the Word was made Flesh.
And dwelt among us.
Hail Mary…
Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God.
That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.
Let us Pray.
Pour forth, we beseech Thee, O Lord, Thy grace into our hearts; that, we to whom the Incarnation of Christ, Thy Son, was made known by the message of an Angel, may, by His Passion and Cross, be brought to the glory of His Resurrection. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.

Latin
Angelus Domini nuntiavit Mariæ;
Et concepit de Spiritu Sancto.
Ave Maria…
Ecce ancilla Domini.
Fiat mihi secundum verbum tuum.
Ave Maria…
Et Verbum caro factum est.
Et habitavit in nobis.
Ave Maria…
Ora pro nobis, sancta Dei Genitrix.
Ut digni efficiamur promissionibus Christi.
Oremus.
Amen.

PROMISE OF THE BLESSED MOTHER TO ST. GERTRUDE THE GREAT
“Whoever shall devoutly recall to me the joy I felt upon uttering the words, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord,” I will most truly show him that I am his Mother, and unfailingly I will succor him.”
The famous Angelus painting

In all its stages of development, the Angelus was closely associated with the ringing of a church bell.
The Angelus is an oil painting by French painter Jean-François Millet, completed between 1857 and 1859. It depicts two peasants standing in a field, bowing their heads reverently to say a prayer, the Angelus, which, together with the ringing of the bell from the church (seen on the horizon), marks the end of a day’s work.
