THE CHAPLET OF SAINT MICHAEL

Saint Michael, appearing one day (in the year 1751) to Antonia d’ Astonaco, a Portuguese Carmelite nun of the convent of Vetralla in the diocese of Viterbo, and a most devout Servant of God, told her that he wished to be honored by Nine Salutations corresponding to the Nine Choirs of Angels; and that he would repay those who practiced this devotion with signal favors, particularly in such times as the Catholic Church should experience some special trial.  This private revelation and prayers were approved by Pope Pius IX by a decree of the Sacred Congregation of Rites dated August 8, 1851.

PROMISES OF SAINT MICHAEL

St. Michael promised that whoever would practice this devotion in his honor would have, when approaching Holy Communion, an escort of nine Angels chosen from each of the nine choirs.  In addition, for those who would recite the Chaplet daily, he promised his continual assistance and that of all the Holy Angels during life, and after death, deliverance from Purgatory for themselves and their relations.

INDULGENCES

Granted by Pope Pius IX, the following Indulgences are attached to the Chaplet of Saint Michael:

1.  An indulgence of seven years and seven quarantines every time the Chaplet is said (a quarantine is equal to 40 days).

2.  An indulgence of 100 days daily to any one who carries this Chaplet about him, or kisses the medal with the representation of the Holy Angels appended to the said Chaplet.

3.  A plenary indulgence once a month to every one who says daily this Chaplet, on any one day when, after Confession and Communion, he shall pray for the exaltation of our holy Mother the Church and the safety of the Sovereign Pontiff.

4.  A plenary indulgence, with the conditions above named, on each of the following days:

     1.   The Feast of the Apparition of St. Michael – May 8
     2.   The Dedication of St. Michael – September 29
     3.   St. Gabriel the Archangel – March 24
     4.   St. Raphael the Archangel – October 24

METHOD OF RECITING THE CHAPLET

St. Michael 5

The chaplet is begun by saying the following invocation on the medal:

VERSICLE RESPONSE V  O God, come to my assistance.
VERSICLE RESPONSE R  O Lord, make haste to help me.
Glory be to the Father…

Make a sincere Act of Contrition:

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell; but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, Who art all good and deserving of all my love.  I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life.  Amen.

Almighty and Everlasting God, Who by a prodigy of goodness and a merciful desire for the salvation of all men, hast appointed the most glorious Archangel, St. Michael, Prince of Thy Church, make us worthy, we beseech Thee, to be delivered from all our enemies that none of them may harass us at the hour of death, but that we may be conducted by him into the august presence of Thy Divine Majesty.  This we beg through the merits of Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.
