Magnificat

Magnificat - Visitation

THE MAGNIFICAT
– A Canticle of Our Blessed Lady –

An Indulgence of 3 years.
An Indulgence of 5 years on the Feast of the Visitation or on any Saturday of the year.
A plenary indulgence once a month on the usual conditions for the daily recitation of this prayer.

This Canticle is said standing and is begun by making the Sign of the Cross.

The Magnificat is one of the eight most ancient Catholic chants and perhaps the earliest Marian hymn.  Taken from St. Luke 1:46–55, it is the most glorious song of the Liturgy.  Inspired by the Holy Ghost, it is Mary’s answer to her cousin Elizabeth, who hails her as the Mother of God, blessed among all women.

The Magnificat
(Prayed or sung in a spirit of humility, thanksgiving and praise, this canticle must have great power over evil.)

1.  My soul CROSS RED # 4 doth magnify the Lord.
2.  And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.
3.  Because He hath regarded the humility of His handmaid; for behold from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
4.  For He that is mighty hath done great things to me: (bow) and holy is His Name.
5.  And His Mercy is from generation unto generations, to them that fear Him.
6.  He hath shewed might in His arm: He hath scattered the proud in the conceit of their heart.
7.  He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble.
8.  He hath filled the hungry with good things; and the rich He hath sent empty away.
9.  He hath received Israel His servant, being mindful of His mercy:
10.  As He spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to his seed for ever.

VERSICLE RESPONSE V (bow) Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost.
VERSICLE RESPONSE R  As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen.
