The Miraculous Image of Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn (Lithuania)
AVE REGINA CÆLORUM
An Indulgence of 5 years.
A plenary indulgence on the usual conditions, when this Antiphon has been repeated daily for a month.
This Antiphon is sung from Compline on February 2 through Wednesday of Holy Week.
Ave, Regina Cælorum is one of the four Marian Antiphons. It is attributed to Hermannus Contractus (1013–1054). The insertion of this hymn in the Office of the Church is attributed to Clement VI (1342–1352). As noted by St. Jerome, the versicle and response of the prayer originally appeared in the writings of St. Ephrem the Syrian (306–373).
English
Hail, O Queen of Heaven enthroned!
Hail, by Angels Mistress owned!
Root of Jesse, Gate of morn,
Whence the world’s true Light was born.
Glorious Virgin, joy to thee,
Loveliest whom in heaven they see!
Fairest thou where all are fair!
Plead with Christ our sins to spare.
Vouchsafe that I may praise thee, O sacred Virgin.
Give me strength against thine enemies.
Let us Pray.
Grant, O merciful God, support to our frailty; that we who commemorate the holy Mother of God, may, by the help of her intercession, arise from our iniquities. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
